'Mountaineering Ireland, Ireland’s National Governing Body for hill-walkers and climbers, is delighted to announce the appointment of its new Chief Officer, Mr. Karl Boyle. The appointment comes at an exciting time for Mountaineering Ireland during the implementation of its new Strategic Development Plan 2009–2013. Karl has joined Mountaineering Ireland from the Defence Forces where he served for over 12 years. His experiences include service with the United Nations in Liberia and with the European Union Force in Bosnia. Karl is a graduate of Commerce from NUI Galway and has a Masters of Business Administration from Dublin City University. A native of Claremorris, Co. Mayo, he is a former Mayo inter-county footballer and has had a keen interest in hill-walking for many years.'Source: http://www.mountaineering.ieAs happy as I am to see this position replaced I do not understand why a governing body for a sport cannot appoint a Chief Officer who is actually a specialist in the field. Is this due to the lack of applicants? What are the requisites for this position. Does anyone have a link to the position's application? How can an applicant with a 'keen interest in hillwalking' really make informed decisions on the future of the sport of Mountaineering in Ireland? I appreciate that this position requires much more than that from a management point of view, but surely this is a necessary requirement?

But seriously, good point Si. I smell a whole pile of bullshit. I believe the BMC have Rab Carrington as their current president: all round climbing wad, with a good business head to boot. Winner.
I vote for Molesy.

Rab is the BMC president. Dave Turnbull is their CEO (no climbing slouch either). Policy is really what drives the organisation and making it is the job of the board of directors headed by the president. In our case thats Alan Tees who is elected along with the other directors. The CEO is staff and his job is to implement policy - not make it. MCI board is here: http://www.mountaineering.ie/aboutthemci/viewdetails.asp?ID=5Thats how I *think* it works S

From: http://www.mountaineering.ie/news/viewdetails.asp?ID=385The Mountaineering Ireland 2010 AGM will take place in the Glendalough Hotel, Co. Wicklow.
As the AGM is the main opportunity for members to have an input into decision-making within the organisation, all members are strongly encouraged to attend. In particular, all clubs are asked to nominate representatives to participate.
The Members' Forum, like the AGM, is open to all members. Come along, hear what's happening around the country, discuss Mountaineering Ireland's priorities for 2010 and raise any questions or concerns you may have.
Any motions for discussion at the AGM, and nominations for the Board, must be received by the Hon. Secretary on or before Friday 5 February 2010. Motions may be submitted by any three full members and should be sent to: Ross Millar, Hon. Secretary, Mountaineering Ireland, Sport HQ, 13 Joyce Way, Park West Business Park, Dublin 12 or email: secretary@mountaineering.ie
The agenda for the AGM with any associated documents and a full programme of events will be published on www.mountaineering.ie on Friday 12 February 2010. Members without internet access can request a printed copy from the Mountaineering Ireland office (01 6251115).
